Alliance Taskforce participates in presentation ceremony of the Austrian Holocaust Memorial Award for Pharrajimos survivor Hugo Höllenreiner
On 2 May 2013 the Austrian Service Abroad awarded Mr. Hugo Höllenreiner, a German Sinto who survived the Pharrajimos (Roma Holocaust), with the Austrian Holocaust Memorial Award 2013. During the ceremony, which was held at the Jewish Museum Munich (Germany), the former President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Charlotte Knobloch said that “our freedom and democracy lives from the courage of every citizen and Mr. Höllenreiner takes this obligation very seriously. Thank you for not remaining silent.“ Hugo Höllenreiner was arrested by the Nazis in 1943 and survived agony in several concentration camps. For 30 years he has given pupils and students insights into his horrific experiences which he had to make amongst others with Josef Mengele during WWII. Project Manager Nikolai Atefie and Legal Advisor Lando Kirchmair of the Alliance Taskforce congratulated Mr. Höllenreiner for the award and thanked him for his great contribution to education on Roma history.
