A European Roma Institute

The idea of a ‘European Roma Institute’ (ERI) seems to become concrete, as George Soros, President of the Open Society Foundation, and Thorbjorn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, reached an agreement to realize this innovative research institution. With the publication of a joint article the two sides explained the motivation behind the creation of an ERI. To this day there existed no place in Europe dedicated especially to the research of Roma culture and traditions. An Alliance for the ERI will be created, where all the principle stakeholders will be represented, in order to create a truly collaborative project. This unique initiative will try to combat common stereotypes by educating the broad public about all aspects of Roma history and culture.

The Alliance of Cities and Regions for the Inclusion of Roma welcomes the realization of the European Roma Institute and is looking forward to exploring a possible co-operation.
